NOTES:

Grandmama was a beautiful, good-hearted and caring woman. We were the recipients of her never ending generosity for which I could never ever repay her for. She was a good cook! I used to sit at the kitchen table and watch her. I regret that I spent more time eating her delicious food than learning the recipes from her. She was great at gardening, sewing and interior decoration. She even re-upholstered and painted her own furniture. And she didn’t play when it came to us jumping on the beds and playing with her chandeliers. Everyone was welcome in her house and she was quite the hostess as evidenced by Sunday family gatherings and holidays. One of my fondest memories was of riding the bus and when we got on Lee Ave, I would let the window down, searching for her, great-aunt Helen or both of them sitting out on the front porch (during the spring/summer). If I spotted them, I would yell out the window at them and wave. I didn’t care if I was too loud and annoyed everyone on the bus, I had to give a shout out to my elders. Grandmama died of breast cancer. She is gone but not forgotten and this page will be a testament to such a kind and memorable woman.

Twenty third psalms

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
He maketh me lie down in green pastures:
He leadeth me beside the still waters.
He restoreth my soul:
He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness
for his name’s sake.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the
shadow of death, I will fear no evil:
for thou art with me:
Thy rod and thy staff, they comfort me;
Thou preparest a table before me
in the presence of mine enemies:
Thou anointest my head with oil;
my cup runneth over.
Surely, goodness and mercy shall follow me
all the days of my life: and I will dwell
in the house of the Lord, for ever.
Amen

Obituary

Mary Louise Gregory, was born May 6, 1925, to the late, Burness and Setular Broussard in Port Arthur, Texas. The Lord called Mary home on Saturday, July 7, 2001 at 6:30am.

Mary united in Holy Matrimony to Willie Bob Gregory in 1944 and moved to St. Louis, Missouri. She worshiped at God’s Way Pentecostal Church.

Mary was a devoted wife and a loving mother. She opened her heart and home to anyone in need. Every Sunday, she insisted on cooking and would make sure that her children would be there. Her neighbors and friends also knew they could get a home cooked meal at Mrs. Gregory’s house. This tradition has kept her family close. Mary’s goal was to make sure everyone was in good health and cared for. She was loved by all, and we miss her dearly.

Mary leaves to cherish her memory; four children, Sandra Clay, Deborah Allen, Linda Thompson and Willie Bob Gregory Jr.; her son, Curtis Gregory, preceded her in death; two sisters, Dorothy Lombard and Gladys Nowlin; and two brothers, Al Broussard and Alfred Broussard; eleven grandchildren; Tonya Roden, John Clark Jr., Antonio Clay, Tangela Brooks, Carlos Allen, Otha Thompson, Lamont Thompson, Tiffany Gregory, Robert Gregory, Tara Gregory and Tina Gregory; ten great-grandchildren; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Just one…

Most of all the other beautiful things in life come
by twos and threes,
by dozens and hundreds.
Plenty of roses, stars, sunsets,
rainbows, brothers, sisters, aunts, cousins,
but only one mother,
in the whole world.

Acknowledgement

The arms of my friends console me; the love of my family surrounds me. The goodness and kindness of my neighbors sustain me like a staff. Though I am exhausted with grief, I am supported, as by a great shining light that rises up within me. I can lift up my head. I can walk upright. I can even smile. For their sympathy is like a serene ocean in which I see glimpses of goodness and beauty never revealed before. In it, my agony is soothed, the ache of my heart becomes bearable, and I know, one day, will heal.

The family wishes to thank everyone for the many warm expressions of thoughtful kindness, your phone calls, cards, flowers and food shared with us. They have helped immeasurably in lightening our burden of sadness. We want you to know that we shall remain forever grateful. May God continue to bless each of you.

I never met my grandfather as he died before I was born. This is what my mother relayed to me: He was a nice man and took very good care of his family. He bought my father a new car, I think it was a Thunderbird. My father wrecked it! He wanted to buy a fishing boat and retire but died before that he could see his plans through. It was winter and he was warming up the car in the garage. His daughter, Sandra, found him on the floor. Carbon monoxide poisoning contributed to his death.

2 February 2014 update: In 1930, Willie Bob had a job as a farm laborer. I assume that he is living with his sister Lucille because his mother, Mary Ella/Mayella/Mae Ella had passed away in 1925 and his father, Willie P, was living in St. Louis, Missouri with his second wife, Ethel  (1930 St. Louis, Missouri census). Willie Bob is listed as a widow on the 1930 Chickasaw County, Mississippi census, implying that he had been married. Who was his first wife and when/how/where did she die? Did they have any children (alive or dead)? Perhaps her death record can be found in the 1912-1943 Mississippi Death Index. Whilst searching for Willie Bob on the 1940 census, I searched 10 pages backwards and forwards from known family members: his father Willie P GREGORY with his second wife in St. Louis, Missouri; his sister Lucille TAYLOR nee GREGORY with her second husband in Brevard County, Florida; grandmama Mary Louise with her parents in Port Arthur, Texas and even some of his GREGORY cousins in Pontotoc, Mississippi. He was nowhere near them. Maybe he just wasn’t counted that census year but I won’t give up. I decided to try the city directories but the earliest he was listed was in the 1955 St. Louis, Missouri city directory. Was this a disappointment? Far from it. In the course of perusing the city directories, I discovered that granddaddy and his father, Willie P, lived in the very same building on 4293 St. Louis Ave that we lived in during the 80’s. I instantly went to Google maps and searched for the address. When I zoomed into the house, memories came flooding back as I saw the familiar red brick and then the empty field to the right with trees and then the school across the street that my brother had attended. The earliest house that I can remember living in was this one and what great memories I have. And now I know it also housed great-grandfather Willie P (4293 St. Louis Ave) and grandparents Willie Bob Sr and Mary Louise (4293A St. Louis Ave)! It is a multiple family home with separate entrances. The apartment we lived in was upstairs, the front door being the second one from the left. If the building is still for sale when I get home, I think I just might inquire if the real estate agency would let me look around. The second important discovery that I made from the city directories was the occupation and work place of Willie Bob Sr. Don’t you just love city directories?! In 1955 he was working as a meat stamper at the St. Louis Independent Packing Company. I do not know how long he was employed by them but his 1970 death certificate shows that his usual occupation was a meat trimmer at Independent Packing Co. According to the City of St. Louis Missouri’s website, “…the Independent Packing Company has been replaced by the Missouri Pacific freight terminal and yards.”

Notes: Surname of Legueral COOPERWOOD (husband of Lucille GREGORY) has been changed from MONTGOMERY to COOPERWOOD on the family tree. There may have been an error on the 1930 census where the enumerator incorrectly listed his surname as MONTGOMERY. Hopefully this new update will help me find Legueral, his wife, Lucille GREGORY and her brother, Willie Bob GREGORY Sr on the 1940 census. Update: Lucille was found on a Florida 1940 census with the surname of Taylor after having remarried.

The doctor who delivered my father either lived at 4619 McMillan Avenue or had his practice there…or both!

My father was a people person with a big heart and humorous disposition. He was a dapper G and dressed up in suits just to go to the theater to watch a movie. Apparently, my father was born at home and was delivered by a doctor who lived or whose medical office was on the same block, right across the street. He only weighed 2lbs so my grandmother fattened him up with her cooking. He was larger than life and at 6’2, a big man. I loved his big belly…he was a lot to love. They called him Big Curtis and my 5’1 mom, Lil Margaret.

A more recent picture of Scullin Elementary. We always waited for the Bi-State bus in front of it on North Kingshighway or across the street on the Lee Avenue side of it.

If I am recalling correctly, Daddy went to Scullin Elementary School which was located down the street from Grandmama’s house on Lee Avenue. Coincidentally, my brother Billy and two GREGORY cousins, Doom and Tonya went there too! The school is a casualty of the public school system’s ineptitude, closing its doors to students a final time in 2003. I do not know where Daddy went to middle school but I do know that he graduated from Beaumont High School on Natural Bridge Rd in St. Louis, Missouri where he was a member of the swim team, track team (shot put) and vaguely remember from looking through his yearbook, football.

Due to a weak heart, he was exempted from serving in the Vietnam war. He met Mama at White Castle when she was working as a car hop and wooed her with roses and record albums. Romantic right? She said he would open up the trunk of his car and show them to her. They were married in 1972 at Grandmama Mary Lou’s house at 4877 Lee Ave, a short time after he had suffered a stroke which made one side of his face droop slightly. It shows up clearly in the wedding photos.

curtisallengregory_unclerichardsliquorstore
Uncle Richard’s liquor store, now a day care center. The facade used to have stones on the bottom half. It looks like it has been bricked and painted over. His house is directly in the back separated by an alley, you can see a light brown roof peeking out behind it.

Daddy was multi-skilled and was able to work at various jobs: manager of a theater which was right up his alley since he loved movies, photographer (earned an associate degree in photography from St. Louis Community College, Florissant Valley), contractor (all levels of construction and helped his best friend Richard SLEDGE…no relation to my mother that I know of…build his liquor store on Lucas & Hunt Road in Normandy, St. Louis, Missouri from the ground up), hunter (he hunted deer and rabbit with both guns and crossbows), archery, fishing, Boy Scout master, good with fixing cars, a bouncer in nightclubs and a private investigator.

My father indulged in good food (the saltier the better) and would wash it down with his favorite drinks, either Pepsi or Coke. He ended up with kidney problems and an even weaker heart. When the doctors told him to stop smoking, drinking (alcohol/soda) and eating unhealthy food, he told my mother that he could stop drinking but not smoking and eating. Even though they gave him only 6 months to live, he would not give them up. I guess it was his way of enjoying life before death.

During the last days of his life, he went to visit his father’s grave where I hope he received some solace and made peace with death. He made sure that he went to visit his BROUSSARD family in Texas as that was probably the last time he would see them. It was after that his health started to decline drastically. After being in the hospital for two weeks, he died of multiple organ failure at Jewish Hospital (now called Barnes-Jewish Hospital). A good man, gone too soon.

Welcome To My Genealogy Blog

This blog was created to help me organize my genealogy research and act as a backup system and repository for all of the information I have collected thus far and will continue to collect. I will be adding more to the family tree as they are found. BROUSSARD, GREGORY, SLEDGE and WILLIAMS are the main surnames in my family tree but are not excluded to those particular surnames (see the image below). DUCK and SANDERS are the surnames that I am researching for my brother (he has a different father). I intend to upload photos, certificates, newspaper articles, etc., with or without transcription. If you’d like to keep up with new posts, either click “follow by email” or enter your email address (located on the sidebar). Feel free to email me if you have additional information on any of these families or have questions: taragregory.bgsw@yahoo.com
